Permit's up next spring. You've done nothing about the test. What happens?
Since 1 November, plenty. To renew onto a third or fourth permit you need to have sat the test in the previous two years. Sat it. Not passed it. The fourth permit only runs for one year, and there's no fifth. After that it's back to the start: theory test, new permit, EDT, the lot.
Do this today
Find your permit. Read the number on it and the expiry date. On your second? That's the clock that matters. The test has to happen before you go for the third, and the waiting list doesn't care when you started looking.
Right, next. Get on the list now, even if you don't feel ready. A date can be moved. It can't be invented six weeks before the permit runs out.
If you've been coasting
Back in February the Irish Times put it at more than 140,000 people still on learner permits. Some of them are one renewal away from this. If that's you, getting ready for the test around here is a smaller job than it looks from the couch.
